Golf Swing Misconceptions – Take the club straight back

Far too often I hear players tell me that they are trying to take the club straight back in their take away. Not only is this almost impossible to accomplish, in trying to achieve such a move the player is making it far more difficult to swing the club athletically. In this video I explain why taking the club straight back is not a good idea and how such a move can hurt your golf swing. I also explain how the club should move away from the ball and that by starting the club back correctly will help you swing the club more effectively.

  1. Very well explained Derek,

You’re right, the golf club should always go back on an arc around your body.

I’ve never seen any professional golfers taking the club straight back. I think if you do this you run the risk of being too steep at the stop and then coming across the ball and slicing or pulling it at impact.

    Cheers

  2. This is good stuff.
I love the visual simplicity of the hoop. To many times explanations of the golf swing sound so complicated. This really has helped me start my club on plane without making it seem impossible.
    Keep the videos coming.

  3. I see these videos and wonder how you set up your sticks for the swing plane of the club you are using without someone elses help! I was thinking that you set up your stance where you are going to hit with the club and 2 sticks in hand, take a sideways step to your right, retake your stance to get the plane angle and match one stick to the shaft and drive it in the group. You then sideways step back online to your hitting spot, and then another sideways step to your left and repeat the above sequence. Is that how you do it, or is there another trick?
