Everyone has topped a shot at one time or another. Almost always this is followed by some well meaning friend or playing partner reminding you to keep your head down. The reality is that if you want to stop topping your golf shots, keeping your head down will help very little.

The true cause of this shot is a loss of posture. This happens when your hips move forward towards the target line at which point you have a couple of options. You could hit the ball fat, shank it or stand up out of posture so you can get the club face somewhere near the golf ball.

Now most players are athletic enough to figure out that the best way to have any chance of hitting the ball once the hips have started moving forward is to stand up, and so that is what they do. This is not an easy move to coordinate and so sometime they are successful and sometime they are not, thus the topped shot. But solving this by trying to stay down will only produce poor shots that are usually fat or shanks.

The real solution is to stay in posture. In this video I show you a drill that I use with players who struggle with losing posture. It is a drill that has delivered great success in terms of more solid and consistent ball striking and I am sure it can do the same for you.
